Handkerchiefs and parasols are waving in the air. A brass band is blaring out classic New Orleans tunes, and men in colorful suits are waving feathered fans and buck-jumping. The entire neighborhood is standing on porches, cheering along the foot parade, joining in and singing along as the stream of people weaves up and down the side streets. This is a New Orleans Second Line, one of the city's iconic cultural institutions and a cornerstone of social life for locals, particularly the African-American community, from which the tradition sprung.

Simply put, in a New Orleans street parade, whether it be for the occasion of a funeral or a celebration, the group leading the parade and the brass band that accompanies them are considered the parade's "Main Line." The large group of revelers and onlookers who invariably follow along behind, enjoying the music and the social scene, are the "Second Line."

As “Second Line Season” approaches, award winning independent filmmaker, Stacey Muhammad, a New Orleans native with an impressive slate of award winning, groundbreaking, cutting edge, critically acclaimed work, prepares to embark upon her latest project, SECOND LINE, THE SERIES -  Cultural Tradition and the People of New Orleans, A Documentary Series which will explores the history / spiritual significance, activist roots, power and purpose of the Second Line, an important part of the cultural heritage of the city of New Orleans.

Regarded as the quintessential New Orleans art form, the term,  “Second Line” and the event is as old as the advent of the Brass Band, which began to emerge in the first quarter of the 19th century.

The series will document the Second Line parade processions which range in size, level of organization and traditions, but in all cases they will include a brass band and jubilant dancing in the street engulfed in the the spontaneous energy of a block party, albeit one that moves a block at a time.

At a time when poverty, gentrification, crime and poor infrastructure continue to plague the residents of New Orleans, this film aims to be an important contribution to the documentation and preservation of the cultural traditions of a city and a people whose struggle for justice are far from over. Our film will appeal to the countless people who love New Orleans and flock to the famous city to experience the unique cultural traditions the city has to offer.
